Ask five golfers where the best golf in the UK is and you'll start five arguments. Scotland invented the game, England perfected the inland version, Wales hides some of the best value links in the world, and Northern Ireland may have the two most dramatic courses anywhere. Each of the UK's golf regions grew out of its own land — and the land decided how the game is played there. As a shop that builds putters out of wood, we pay attention when terrain shapes the tool. Here's how the regions compare, and what each one asks of your game.

Scotland: where the ground plays the game

Scotland is the home of links golf — courses laid over the sandy, wind-scoured ground that "links" the sea to the farmland. The turf is firm and tight, the bunkers are deep pots, and the wind is a permanent playing partner. The Old Course at St Andrews is the template; Carnoustie, Muirfield, Royal Troon, Turnberry, and Royal Dornoch fill out a roster no country can match.

The style demands the ground game: low runners, bump-and-runs, and — crucially — the putter from well off the green. On a true links, putting from 30 yards off the surface is often the smart play. No region in the world puts the flat stick in your hands more often. This is also the land of Old Tom Morris, the greenkeeper-clubmaker of St Andrews whose hands shaped courses and clubs alike — the original one-shop golf craftsman.

England: heathland's quiet perfection

England has fine links of its own — Royal Birkdale, Royal St George's, and Royal Lytham have all hosted The Open — but England's signature gift to golf is the heathland course. On the sandy heaths southwest of London, architects like Harry Colt and James Braid built inland courses that play firm like links but frame every hole with heather, gorse, and pines: Sunningdale, Walton Heath, Woking. Heathland golf is strategic rather than brutal — angles matter more than raw carry, and the greens tend to be subtler and quicker than a windblown links surface. England is also parkland country: lush, tree-lined courses like The Belfry, where the game plays through the air, American-style.

Wales: the connoisseur's secret

Wales flies under the radar, and the golfers who go come back grinning. Royal Porthcawl is regularly ranked among the best links in Britain, Royal St David's sits beneath a medieval castle at Harlech, and Pennard — the "links in the sky" — plays along clifftops above the Gower coast. The courses are rugged, the green fees are gentler than Scotland's marquee names, and the crowds are thinner. If you want the links experience without the pilgrimage pricing, Wales is the play.

Northern Ireland: drama turned up to eleven

Northern Ireland packs more spectacle per mile of coastline than anywhere in golf. Royal County Down, beneath the Mourne Mountains, is routinely ranked the number one course in the world outside the US; Royal Portrush returned to The Open rota in 2019 and hosted again in 2025. The dunes are bigger, the views are wilder, and the golf is as stern as it is beautiful.

How the regions compare at a glance

Region Signature style Big names What it asks of you
Scotland True links St Andrews, Carnoustie, Muirfield, Royal Dornoch Ground game, wind play, long lag putting
England Heathland + links Sunningdale, Walton Heath, Royal Birkdale Strategy, angles, precise irons
Wales Rugged links Royal Porthcawl, Royal St David's, Pennard Adventurous shot-making, value hunting
Northern Ireland Dunes links Royal County Down, Royal Portrush Nerve, carries, humility

What the terrain teaches a putter maker

Here's what strikes us about the UK regions: nowhere else does the putter do so much work. Links golf hands you 60-foot lag putts, putts from off the green, and greens where the wind moves the ball. Feel — knowing exactly how hard you've hit it — matters more there than anywhere.

That's the quality we chase in wood. A layered hardwood face has a soft, solid feel at impact that gives you honest feedback on strike, and our Bandolier — Padauk banded with Zebrawood around a zero-torque center shaft — is built for exactly the kind of long, rolling putts the links serves up: high MOI for off-center forgiveness, a face that stays square, and a roll that gets the ball hugging the ground early. Old Tom would have recognized the workshop, if not the CNC machine.

Common questions

What is the difference between links, heathland, and parkland golf?

Links courses sit on sandy coastal ground with firm turf, few trees, and constant wind; heathland courses are inland but sandy, framed by heather and pines; parkland courses are lush, tree-lined, and play through the air. Scotland is defined by links, England by heathland and parkland, with great links in all four nations.

Which UK region is best for a first golf trip?

Scotland, for the history — St Andrews is golf's home and the Old Course is a public course you can ballot to play. For fewer crowds and lower fees with true links golf, Wales is the sleeper pick.

Do I putt more on links courses?

Almost certainly. Firm links turf makes the putter the smart choice from well off the green, and huge greens mean long lag putts. Feel and distance control matter more on links than on any other course style.
