Humidity plays a bigger role than you might think. High humidity can slow the greens by adding moisture to the surface, making the grass slightly tackier and reducing ball speed. On the other hand, dry conditions can firm up the turf, leading to faster rolls. Grass grain also impacts the ball's path—putting with the grain makes the ball travel faster, while putting against it adds resistance and slows it down. You can often read grain direction by looking at the sheen of the grass: shiny means you're putting with the grain, and dark means you're going against it.

Time of day also matters. In the morning, dew or lingering moisture can slow greens considerably. As the day heats up and the greens dry out, speeds increase. Late in the day, especially on busy courses, foot traffic can create subtle indentations or worn spots that make putts more unpredictable. These conditions require adjustments in speed, aim, and confidence.
